  1. Q:  Could you tell us about your first encounter 
  2. with Marshall McLuhan?

  4. A:  I was a graduate student at teachers college 
  5. and the course was being conducted by Louis 
  6. Forsdale. He‚Äôs retired now but he was a friend of 
  7. McLuhan. McLuhan was an obscure English 
  8. professor at the University of Toronto, but 
  9. Forsdale was well aware of some of McLuhan‚Äôs 
  10. ideas and brought him down from Toronto to give 
  11. a lecture. McLuhan, in those days, still smoked 
  12. cigars, although he mostly had them unlit as far as 
  13. I could see, and he gave his talk with an unlit cigar
